The days are filled with thoughts of the End of Days. Apocalyptic Horses on the gallop. Eyes wide. Sparks from their hooves set the forests alight. Steam from their nostrils melts the ice fields. Sweat runs down their flanks to join the salty oceans. I lean close and hear the hum of them like a heartbeat: quick and slow and the quick again.

'If seven maids with seven mops 
swept it for half a year,
do you suppose' someone said,
'that would get it clear?'
'I doubt it,' said the rest of us,
our faces filled with fear.
